MDT Children’s Workshop

June 4 @ 5:30 pm June 15 @ 7:30 pm

Every June we sponsor a Music & Dance Theater (MDT) workshop for kids. At the end of the two-week workshop, the kids get to perform at Herriman LIVE, the kickoff event to Herriman Town Days week.

Email workshops@friendsofherriman.org with questions.

Our mission is to give youth ages 7-17 a well rounded workshop experience. This workshop will go through music, dance, and theater skills and create a fun and interactive space for youth.  We want the youth to assess their skills and qualities, consider their strengths, and set goals in order to realize and maximize their potential while having an impact on their theater communities.

WHEN: Workshops will be June 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 15

TIME: Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30 pm and Saturdays 10 am-12 pm

PERFORMANCE: June 17 at 5 pm in conjunction with Herriman LIVE

We will be have Masterclasses taught by theater professionals in our community.  Children will learn choreography that they will perform in front of a live audience.

Masterclass professionals:

Bryan Johnson:
Bryan’s performance credits include May We All, School of Rock, Scarlet Pimpernel, and A Christmas Carol 2021-2023 at HCT, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Beast) with Timpanogos Arts; The Drowsy Chaperone (Robert Martin) with SCERA and Lehi Arts; Pride and Prejudice (Charles Bingley) with Creekside Theatre Fest; and A Christmas Carol – A One Man Show with The Covey and various public libraries. Bryan graduated from BYU with a degree in mechanical engineering and works as a Software Developer at Ancestry for their DNA team.

Shaylia Johnson:
Some of Shay’s favorite roles include Mrs. Potts (Beauty and the Beast), Jane Bingley (Pride and Prejudice), Queen Constantina (Cinderella), Aquata (Little Mermaid), and a very pregnant Sister Mary Leo (Nunsense). Her all-time favorite roles, however, are wife and mother. Shaylia has a BA in Family and Consumer Sciences as well as a minor in Ballroom Dance from BYU. Off stage she can be found chasing around her crazy kiddos, sewing elaborate costumes, and designing and making wigs for West Valley Arts.

Gary Sorenson:
Gary Sorenson has been music directing productions for 20 years.  In the summer of 2014, he performed a lead role and assisted with the music direction in the New York Musical Theater Festival’s debut of Colette Call’s Harriet. Broadway veterans Capathia Jenkins, Alan Green and Tony Award winner Lillias White were among the cast. Mr. Sorenson has been the music director for many productions along the Wasatch Front including Cinderella, Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and The Music Man with Hale Centre Theatre, Westside Story and Guys and Dolls at Centerpointe Legacy Theater, The Altar Boyz and Sweeney Todd with the Eqyptian Theater in Park City when it was an equity house. He has music directed Footloose, Les Miserables, The Pirates of Penzance, Power in His Touch and helped develop Harriet here in Salt Lake City with multiple readings, performances and recordings. For the last twenty-four years, Mr. Sorenson has split his time between performing onstage in both operatic productions and musical theater productions, conducting pit orchestras and sitting at the piano teaching nearly 100,000 voice lessons

Ryan Withers:
Some like to call Ryan a character, to which he asks, “which one?” He came into this world singing a perfect A#, which someone misinterpreted as screaming. How rude. Singing and performing are his passion and he has had the privilege of being a part of some incredible productions. Some of his performing credits include: The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square; Idaho Falls Opera: Gianni Schicchi (Beto) and The Telephone (Ben); BYU-Idaho Operetta – The Mikado (Pish Tush); BYU-Idaho Opera Scenes – Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Madame Butterfly (Pinkerton), Eugene Onegin (Eugene Onegin); and The Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy: A Christmas Carol (Party Guest/Bass 1); Parker Theatre: The Pirates of Penzance (Policeman); Timpanogos Arts Foundation: Beauty and the Beast (Lumierre); and Hale Center Theater Orem: The Music Man (Oliver Hix/Baritone). He is so excited to share his love of theater with your children.
